Their big mistake and many other people do this is to treat Trump as normal. He is unique. That his predecessors in the GOP were bad doesn’t change it.

We saw him get away with utterances that would have wrecked the campaign or even the career of any other politician. That was a sign in itself. I believe a lot of his supporters know that he is a criminal, but that did not bother them, since they were convinced that Hillary was an even bigger criminal.
