If you can, try to grow at least your own tomatoes, there are still a lot of heirloom varieties available. And SAVE those seeds. You won’t always succeed, but it’s worth a shot, IMO. Grow them in pots, grow them in your flower beds. Feed them with composted cow poo, it doesn’t stink up the place like so many people think. Seed Savers Exchange and Seeds of Change have great selections of almost entirely heirloom varieties.

This year the only tomato I have that made it is a “chocolate” cherry, which simply means it stays partly green even when fully ripe. I have a few others, some died, and some seem to be stuck, not growing, not dying either. Stupid weather. I have a Lemon Cucumber(which is not lemony tasting, just round and yellow)that went nuts and some green beans. All heirloom and pretty tasty. I let my real veggie garden rest this year and used my flower beds and lots of containers for veggies and herbs. It’s been mixed results wise, but I do have a few seeds for next year. As long as you have a sunny place and remember to water and feed regularly, it’s not hard to grow at least a little of your own stuff.
