As an addendum, I would like to note that I am thinking of taking a significant other’s last name to show a complete break from my own family history.

The Great-Grandfather who also had my last name abused my Great-Grandmother. I want to break from that history of a abuse evident with him and my father.

My cousin changed her name to my grandmother’s name (they already shared a first name) after her parents’ divorce.

Yeah, her dad’s kind of a turkey. Never hit her mom (that I know of) but did everything else.
