Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Reagan and Hillary Rodham Clinton were governors’ wives first, and Laura Bush’s mother-in-law Barbara was first lady. So all these first ladies had experience being traditional ceremonial helpmeets to their husbands.

Michelle Obama went from working woman to First Lady. She went from being the Alpha person, to a supporting role in which she is judge by her appearance, more than anything. It’s a hard act. I appreciate the effort she is making.
