I was actually surprised to find out that Edward I was the first English king to speak English as his first language. Put things in perspective. He became King about 160 years after William the Conqueror invaded England. It would be as if all our presidents from Washington through Truman spoke French instead of English.

I’ve always thought Edward III was the first King to speak English as his first language. I think Edward I was the first to really speak it fluently. Henry II is said to have understood English fairly well, but couldn’t really speak it.
