Maybe the best approach is to have the State issue civil unions only, to whomever, gay or straight; then the fundamentalist types would be kept at bay; and if you want to be married that’s a religious extra and you certainly can find any kind of church you want these days. Then dying partners of whichever type could have their sweetie with them in every case.

Why ‘keep the fundamentalist types at bay’ if they are advocating fewer rights for some people? They are wrong and should not be catered to. If some people can legally marry, all people should be able to legally marry. Hell with the semantics.
