re: #652 William Barnett-Lewis

It goes back to the founders utter fear of standing armies. Only tyrants had a standing army and only a free militia, and every freeman must own a gun, could stop said standing army. This grew out of the bitter experiences of the English Civil War and the varied religious wars on the continent. Unarmed peasants were slaughtered while freemen could have a fighting chance.

I personally have no problem with a training/licensing system but in exchange would want the NFA of 1934 & the GCA of 1968 repealed as well.

Of course nowadays, where armies have tanks, drones, NVG, over the horizon artillery and more besides, the idea of a freeman with a rifle stopping an army is ludicrous. Not that it stops the NRA from masturbating with gun oil to Red Dawn every chance they get.
