I guess I simply don’t get the obsession with discussing the South’s racial problems. I live in California. We have racial problems of our own.

Why is it so important to go over this again, and again, and again?

Because it helps to explain the bizarre overreactions of the tea partiers and others obsessed with the notion that Obama is not a legitimate president, but rather a threat who hates America.

And because our racist past is the darkest stain on American history.
