Except that the cable companies and telcos own “the last mile” to consumers. A new service would have to either go wireless or pull fiber to their customers. Either way, the startup costs would be huge. Maybe 56K will make a comeback.

Or they could provide service by leasing the capacity from telcos or cable companies like Other Common Carriers provided long distance service using ATT facilities back in the day.

I would really like to know and/or understand the cost/pricing structure for providing Internet service (whether it be a telco, cable company, or ISP). Who gets charged what, and how are revenues to the telco’s applied and distributed.
