Did we have conspiracy theorists before the 1960’s? If we did, I have never heard of them. What is it in the modern day that brings these people out?

Lincoln was allowed to be assassinated by Booth so Edward Stanton could take over is one rather prominent conspiracy theory still running rampant.

Corollaries to the above are that it actually wasn’t Booth, that the person shot in the barn really wasn’t Booth, and that Lincoln didn’t die because he was tired of serving so he voluntarily stepped down after being slightly wounded at Ford’s Theater.
