Hell, the Irish didn’t become Americans; they were before they ever left their homeland. This is why we were able to assimilate them so quickly. They didn’t change to accommodate America - America changed to accommodate them. One of the most amazing things in the history of this country, if you ask me. Universally hated by all the better sort, the Irish Catholics became dominant political, cultural, and business actors in one generation. The Irish were so successful that EVERYONE here loves to claim even the slightest bit of Irish ancestry.
