I haven’t personally seen it either, Pink, but it is true, and can be seen in numerous TV shows and movies, that people think we in the South are racist heathens.
Reine: Yep. Here’s one of my anecdotal observations, for what it’s worth…
I have an acquaintance who’s an aeronautical engineer. He was working somewhere in NY state, when he was offered a much better job at the huge NASA facility in Huntsville, Alabama.
He was in a cab en route to the NYC airport when the driver struck up a conversation: “Where are you going?” etc. He told the driver he was moving to Alabama. The man looked horrified.
“Alabama? Holy sh*t!” he exclaimed.
The engineer laughed and said, “What’s wrong with Alabama?”
“Well, you’d better watch yourself,” the driver said. “You know, the people down there are not exactly rocket scientists.”
“You’re not going to believe this,” the engineer said, “but where I’m moving to, everybody is a rocket scientist.”
The driver then changed the subject, to N-word jokes.
