It’s *way* older than that.

When the kosher who were willing to be experimentally sorta not-always kosher (still keeping kosher homes, but hey — new country, new customs, and if mom and dad don’t know it won’t hurt them), and Chinatown was right next to the Jewish Lower East Side, and there wouldn’t be any Christians out and about… it became a New York thing.

Then when all those Lower East Side Jews became Brooklyn Jews, and their Brooklyn Jew kids became Los Angeles Jews and Detroit Jews and Miami Jews… it spread.
