We’re about 70 years into a cultural movement that’s told its stakeholders that most Americans aren’t Real Americans, and that the basic sorting mechanism is loyalty to a small number of individuals, organizations, and rigid positions. This isn’t the first time that “patriots” have crushed on a foreign authoritarian figure, because whether its Pinochet, Putin, or Franco…what they long for is the license exercised by autocrats.
