One possible reason for their objection is the possible effect of the bill on in vitro fertilization. In the mid-1990’s, I knew a Mormon couple whom I would describe as very conservative. I’m quite confident that they were, and are, in favor of criminalizing abortion. I was surprised when they spent $9500 on in-vitro fertilization. Of course I didn’t say anything about the 3 or 4 “excess” embryos which are “discarded” for each in-vittro fertilization attempt, but it would have been interesting to hear their reaction. This made me think that some on the religious right, while opposed to abortion and contaception, do NOT want the government involved in the decision of well-off families to try in-vitro fertilization.

The Church opposes in-vitro.
