It’s a pretty safe bet that Romney is going to go far-right with his VP pick, to rally the hardcore SoCon/TeaPartier contingent. Problem is, they have to find someone who’s not so batshit-crazy that they won’t completely alienate what few moderates, and swing-voters who are borderline Romney votes.

Also, there is the matter that in nationwide polling, most of the nutcases have HEAVILY negative approval numbers, especially when put head-to-head with Obama/Biden.

They’ll probably go with someone like Pawlenty or Portman, both of whom have solid conservative records yet don’t have the reputation of being overly hysterical in rheotric. Then again it’s said Mitt is considering Paul Ryan who equates his budget plan with the Bible.
