Well, I must say I was pretty surprised when Mitt explained that he didn’t want a big tax cut. Wait, what?

Romney handled that part well and Obama was caught on the hop to some extent. The oil subsidies point, from what I understand, was another place where Romney was ready and more capable than assumed.

That’s the good news for Mitt Romney: This debate was a must-win for him and he won it. But he also placed himself into positions he’ll not be able to move away from again, and the Democrats can be counted on to direct as much fire on those positions as they can muster. He also demonstrated his debating ability to the president, and it was greater than Obama expected. But Obama is capable of adaptation to changed circumstances (with drone strikes being the most visible proof of this) so it is certain Obama will change his strategy in the second debate to counter Romney’s expect strategy. Romney, for his part, will need to anticipate the changes Obama is likely to make and plan a few changes of his own to keep Obama guessing.
