Despotic regimes always start this way: “Protecting” the people, whether it be from some outside “evil” or “from themselves.” Some will take power directly, but the most insidious ones are those that convince the people to surrender power willingly. Those survive by guilting the people, holding up that surrender of authority as a shield against any objections to their actions.
