Now it’s just a tiny spot on the Pacific, of some logistical use. Long, long ago, though, it would have seemed like a large island. The atoll is atop ancient volcanoes, which have been sinking back down for millions of years. The plasticity of the near-molten parts of the crust is such as to give way to the force of the mass above pressing down.

That natural scale has been temporarily tripled or quadrupled by the DoD over the years.

The atoll must be ecologically interesting, but the main island is a very funky artifact.
