I didn’t get it either and was also thinking “past tense of lie” until I moused over the link to the Horst-Wessel-Lied.

And that’s where we are.

They’re no longer convinced that we’re after 1933, but the thing is, if they think we’re in the Nazi—Red Wars of the 20s and early 30s, that’s arguably an even worse future for some. Because it means they’re convinced they can still get back to 1933.
