And celebration of the purported “triumph” of the Enlightenment in the West bears more than a passing resemblance to the vulgar worship of success.

Oh, what a load of dirty underpants. What meaning there is in that sentence is devoutly idiotic.

The Enlightenment was a triumph. It was a wonderful, electrifying moment when human progress leaped forwards, where the ideas of self-governance and ethical responsibility really took root, and when science became something that was able to hold onto its discoveries and put them into a framework accessible even to amateurs. It was a triumph. The only things that have suffered enormously from the Enlightenment are religious institutions that have failed to learn the lessons of the Enlightenment.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with ‘worship of success’. That’s asinine.
