At any given time, at least 2/3rds of Hitler’s forces were tied up on the Eastern Front. Deduct the other occupation forces in Norway, Greece and the Balkans, and the allies were facing at most one quarter of the German Armed Forces in Western Europe.

The Germans were so starved for warm bodies, particularly towards the end of 1944, that they took to jamming POWs into Wehrmacht uniforms and having them perform the most dangerous duties.
