Meanwhile, I think back to that clip where a lone (black) Capitol Police officer is trying to hold off the horde at the bottom of a stairwell; the horde lurches and jumps forward, basically chasing him up the stairs. All the while, he’s frantically trying to radio for backup; as he’s going upstairs, he picks up and whips out his baton to get them to back off, but they just keep coming at him, daring him to swing, so he has no choice but to retreat further inside.

If the cop had actually hit the lead dude daring him to take a swing, the mob would have likely killed him too and he knew it.
