Yes. To avaricious people, it is inconceivable that anyone could be getting something for free to assist them in continuing to exist, but be willing to give that free thing up in exchange for a life that doesn’t suck as much. They are also incapable of conceiving of a person that lives off of so little that foodstamps are a necessary thing to prevent starvation.

This is also where the oft-cited “Half the country doesn’t even pay income tax!” outrage comes from. They cannot wrap their heads around the idea that that doesn’t mean that half the country evades taxes somehow, but rather that half the country makes so little that there is nothing to tax.
