As with most gun-nuts, they’re typically people who are actual terrified by most things in life, and the desire to own military-grade weaponry is just a projection of that fear. If the military or law enforcement ever came for them or their guns, they’d fire in panic or flee in terror.

Fear, fear of the black drug addict breaking into their home, raping their women and taking away their manhood, fear of a black president’s troops breaking in to take away his manhood (guns), fear of Arab extremists breaking in to take his Christianity away.

The US has a culture of fear, there will always be people that are susceptible to this culture.
