United Technologies net income rises 8%

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — United Technologies Corp. said fourth-quarter net income rose 8% to $1.15 billion, or $1.23 a share, from $1.06 billion, or $1.08 a share in the year-ago period.

and:

Abbott earnings per share 98 cents versus 77 cents

Abbott said Wednesday that it earned $1.54 billion, or 98 cents a share in the fourth quarter, compared to $1.20 billion, or 77 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.

IBM posts earnings rise, sees strong growth in 2009

IBM Corp. on Tuesday reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit that rose 12% from the year-ago period, boosted by strong software sales and signings of new services contracts, and said it expects earnings for 2009 to exceed Wall Street analysts’ estimates.

Deutsche Bank upgrades Ford, Lear, American Axle

LONDON (MarketWatch) — Deutsche Bank lifted its ratings on a couple of auto stocks on Wednesday. It upgraded Ford Motor Co. to hold from sell, saying that while it remains concerned about the magnitude of the auto maker’s recent and prospective cash burn, it continues to believe the company has sufficient liquidity to withstand its worst-case scenario. Deutsche Bank also raised its rating on Lear Corp. , to hold from sell, saying it believes the company may not have to file for bankruptcy protection.
