He did remarkably well, given all of that. Despite running a lackluster, disorganized campaign, being outspent many times over and suffering from disenchantment over Bush in particular and Republicans in general, he only lost by 46% to 53%, a 7 point spread.
Well - he did OK. It seems to me presidential races are mostly won on very small margins, and the 7% was larger than normal.
