Which is best contrasted with the first post-Mondale candidate who tried to call upon the whackos and the fringe for support, namely John “F’n” Kerry, who was very much like Romney in that he played to the fringe in the primaries, then tried to convince folks in the general that he didn’t really believe anything he’d said and that he was a truly “moderate” candidate. Didn’t work out for him at all, as I don’t expect it to work for Romney.

True, but as much as the left hated W, he never had to prove that he was a real American, a real Christian, etc. So Obama still has hurdles, some of them worse than 4 years ago.

The right isn’t motivated by Romney, they’re motivated by Obama hatred—they’d show up to vote for a ham sandwich if it were the GOP nominee. One clue: there was a substantial enthusiasm gap between the GOP and Dems in 2008, in the Dems’ favor. That gap is gone now, indeed enthusiasm has been stronger on the right for quite a while.
