One thing that has amazed me about this shutdown is to see Senate Dem unity at a time when it seemed like such a thing was practically a myth. None of the usual suspects are on TV arguing that giving Donny the money would be “better” than continuing the shutdown, none are floating “deals” that they’d be personally okay with in order to win their vote for cloture, and none are badmouthing the leadership by suggesting that they’re wrong for refusing to “compromise.” I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Chuck Schumer has finally found his balls and realized that standing up to Donny is of greater importance than “going along to get along.”

Also, what exactly would be the point? With the Dems firmly in control of the House and popular opinion overwhelmingly blaming Trump for the shutdown for any Senate Dems to vacillate now would just serve to turn them into pariahs. In other words I think it has less to do with Schumer per se than the current state of play. Especially considering that Collins and Corker have already blinked and said they’d support the House bill to re-open the government and Romney is overtly trying to probe Trump’s weakness ahead of 2020.
