It’s not far removed from the idea that being an unpaid intern is actually beneficial because you’re getting “job experience.”

The only real benefit of unpaid internships was the connections you could make. And the sinister part of it was/is that making them unpaid serves a gatekeeper effect… the “wrong” kind of person can’t take the unpaid internship. Sort of like being the member of a golf club and working there as a caddy.
