It was his obstruction of the investigation about the hack and his threatening the FBI Agent which screwed him.

Also, to be clear, it was that his obstruction was active. He didn’t act like a journalist and simply clam up, refusing to identify confidential sources. He attempted to alter and obfuscate stolen data. He threatened an investigator.

In the end his sin was that he got way too deep, lost sight of both journalistic ethics and best practices. He chose to become a spokesperson for Anonymous instead of a reporter with only the thinnest patina of separation or impartiality.
