My dad signed up for the Army before he got drafted, and he was sent to Korea as a cook. He didn’t want to be a cook, he wanted to be in communications with his younger brother. He got all the paperwork prepared and ready for their colonel to sign when he came for dinner one night. And for the dinner, dad took one of these sides of beef that had been shoved in a can, did it up right and served some of it to the colonel. Well that surely backfired. Not only did the colonel refuse to sign for the transfer (who wants to lose a good cook in the middle of a war?), he made my dad go over to *his* cook to show him how to make that tasty, tender beef out of those canned sides. So my dad cooked his entire time in the Army and he was a better cook than our mother.
