FBI: Jews Are the Victims of Nearly Two-Thirds of Religiously Motivated Hate Crimes

This article annoys me, both for misreporting the numbers and, well, just a minute. First, the report is here. The article uses table 1 for its numbers.

While there were 6222 incidents, there were not 1,480 anti-religious incidents. The article changed column to number of victims instead. The actual number of anti-religious incidents was 1,233, of which 771 (not 711) were anti-Jewish incidents.

The part that annoys me is how the article’s careful accuracy leads to the implication anti-Jewish numbers are the biggest deal. They’re not. The article is literally correct that they’re the largest anti-religious case.

The racial category itself formed almost half the total hate crime incidents in 2011 with 2,917 incidents. Of these 2,076 anti-black incidents.

One last kicker. There were more hate crimes based on sexual orientation than there were on religion. And just anti-male homosexual came very close to topping the incidents against jews with 760 incidents. Given that there were another 359 incidents where gender wasn’t included this number may actually be higher.

Anti-Semitism is bad. But if you’re going to report it, report it accurately - and don’t imply it’s the worst when it isn’t.
