It’s a blanket susbidy. Which is always a lousy idea. Why not also have government-subsidized sales of… oh, I dunno, toaster ovens, or baseball gloves, or plumbing supplies?

Without address the issue of the rightness of rebates, but the car industry is a bigger driver of the economy than the baseball glove industry.
