I don’t know what the real story behind that phrase is. I’ve heard everything from it being about rude table manners and sloppy eating to incompetent actors getting hit with eggs, to clowns being pelted with fruit and eggs in low-rent, low class circuses by rowdy crowds. Who knows what the real story is?
