Yes, we can be nurtured with great orthodoxy but if we remain open, we can grow and learn from new ideas.

That is also part of nurture- are we taught question, to be free to question or are we taught to look downwards, always.

As for your family situation, as you note as we grow older we learn there are many things which are not as we thought. As we experience life (a nurture thing), we grow- ideas change, long held beliefs change or are moderated (and sometimes reinforced!) and evern our relationships change with our ever evolving insights.
