Fascinating, I really enjoyed those machines. Most of the dozen or so I saw were turn of the century. They have, of course, been replaced by the modern ‘fruit machines’ which take a pound coin.

Fruit machine use to be a term used in the states in the early 1900’s for a slot machine. The most popular name that caught on was a “bell” machine. Most slots were generically know as “bell machines” because the first 3 wheel slot was know as the “Liberty Bell” machine, and also, the “bell” symbol was used on most early slots (still used).
