Trader Joe’s actually has a good reputation as a place to work for.
Whole Foods doesn’t have a horrible reputation in terms of its employment standards AFAIK, this specific incident notwithstanding. It’s more that the guy is a fervent opponent of “government meddling”, aka corporate taxes, subsidized healthcare etc.
His attitude is basically “I treat my employees right, so we don’t need the government to interfere”. This latest story shows exactly where the fallacy lies in that argument: it’s not up to CEOs to decide what constitutes “treating employees right”.
