I’d say the Right have been remarkably effective in getting people to forget that health insurance = compensation = something you paid for with your work, and instead they now see it as some sort of nice present that your beneficent employer gives you out of the goodness of it’s* heart.

*since most people work for big companies.

Of course you have just described how the hard right sees compensation itself.

The little people are supposed to be wage slaves who are given a few scraps from the master’s table as a matter of charity.

Oddly enough, at some point high enough on the corporate ladder, this viewpoint reverses and only then does it become a matter of recruiting and retaining the best talent by providing high compensation.
