Settlements for injuries or illness are non-taxable. I’m not sure how the IRS would consider this. Settlements for property losses aren’t taxed to the extent they cover a loss. Certainly covering the cost of selling their home, buying another home, and private full-time security for several years wouldn’t be taxed.
