“We don’t need altar boys”? Well, true, the priest can hold the candles up with his teeth while he reads the Gospel, it will look a little weird at first, but it can be done.

But being an altar server has traditionally been a way for young people to experience an important and responsible role within the Church, and also commonly the first step toward the priesthood for boys who have a vocation.

Saying ‘we don’t need altar boys’ is like saying ‘we don’t need the faithful at all. We can keep the Church in a box, and not let anything like the needs of our parishioners or the vocations crisis bother us. Last one left alive, turn out the lights at the Vatican before you croak.’

Not smart.

Maybe I read it too fast, but I think he’s referring to not having ‘altar boys’ defending the church - he wants those defending the church to be tougher on their opponents.
