re: #88 lawhawk

Greets and saluts… bad news coming out of Utrecht, and law enforcement is treating it as a terror incident.

Meanwhile, New Zealand is wasting no time tackling the mass shooting and the easy availability of guns there. They’re likely to vote on a package to strengthen gun control laws within the next two weeks. It makes for a great compare/contrast with the US, where we have mass shootings every 10-14 days like clockwork and they just blend into the bloody fooking background.

CNN frames it as no easy solution, except there are ways to improve public safety that will ultimately make the country safer for everyone - you can’t reduce risk to zero, but you can strive to make that a goal. Make it harder for people to get guns, show necessity, and limit the kinds of guns that are available to the public. Make licensing and periodic testing a part of the regulatory scheme. Make confiscation for domestic violence a part of the scheme.

What frustrates me about the argument is we have done things like this. Airplane crashes and car crashes used to be a lot higher. Enough people saw that as a problem and made the necessary fixes. Now do we still have car crashes and plane crashes? Yes but reduction has happened. The same can and should happen with guns.
