I am sure that all here know that scammers spoof the origination phone number of their scam calls. They often try to use the same area and exchange codes as the targetted number.

There was a recent case of a local business asking a scammer to not use their phone number as the ‘origination number’. The scammer after that used the business’ number as the origination number for all their calls. Which resulted in a huge number of complaints to and about the (innocent) business.

Additionally, some scammers create lists of active phone numbers and sell them to other scammers
