if part of going to jail is supposed to be a deterrent effect, every one of these sentences has been woefully inadequate

I think the seven year sentence was adequate. A lot of these J6 terrorists are middle aged fairly prosperous white people who have never experienced real hardship in their lives, so I think years in a prison is going to be a real eye opener for them.
