MRAP. Coming to a police department near you.

Since the military is now blowing off excess armored vehicles for as little as $2000 police departments are buying in. Makes some people nervous, why would a city way down the violent crime list need one? Answer-They actually don’t. It is pointed out that a special armored SWAT vehicle is $100,000 or more new. I gotta wonder why a special vehicle is needed at all. I see these armored vans and trucks that Brinks uses. Good enough for tens of millions in diamonds or gems, bit inadequate to a SWAT team?

So what if I was a big truck fan. as a civilian could I buy an MRAP truck with the turret? Heck of a storm chasing vehicle. But I think there is a law against re selling armored vehicles except for police. LAPD had a Bradley, used it a little with a big battering ram. It’s now kept in a police museum.

So what is a little town like Banning California going to do with an MRAP? Might be cheap to buy but expensive to run. And a little unnerving to those who would like police departments to equip like police, not the army. Any little accident in traffic would be far worse. At least for the poor guy that thing runs into or over.
