Actually Ludwig, Birth of a Nation came out in 1915. It was made by D.W. Griffith and at $100,000 it was the most expensive movie made up till its time. It was as evil as you understand it to have been, but still debuted to national acclaim and was the first movie even screened at the White House (by Woodrow Wilson).
