re: #908 Spare O’Lake

Consider my #898 and #906. Sharia Law’s treatment of women in matrimonial matters and estate matters is largely repugnant with basic Western values. Jewish Law not so much.

I don’t find it repugnant, and I don’t know of anyone who would consider me the shrinking violet, submissive type. ;o)

Sharia law isn’t a simple thing—in fact it’s just as complex as any other legal system. It’s not just a case of “Okay, the Qur’an says this, so let’s do it.” There’s a whole bunch of other stuff that goes along with it. What you see in Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan has a lot of culture mixed in (and in the case of the Taliban, ignorant brutality). There aren’t any countries practicing Islamic law because there aren’t any truly Islamic states (in the classical sense), IMO.

That being said, would I want to live under sharia? As things stand now, no. Ever? I’m not sure… I’ve pondered that many times, and I’m still trying to work out the answer.
