No, it isn’t. Again, when the DC Navy Yards murders were committed, a good number of reporters ran with the idea that the killer used an AR-15. More than one media outlet used that as a springboard for talk about gun control, with the New York Daily News putting such an article on the front page and thus suffering its own “Dewey Defeats Truman moment” when it was learned that the killer’s weapon was a pump-action shotgun.

The fact that the weapon was that kind of shotgun took the wind of the gun control groups’ sails regarding the DC shootings, because the Remington 870 is the kind of hunting weapon that Joe Biden and many other Democrats had made clear they were not trying to ban.

So yeah, the type of gun used matters.
