We used to go to the coast at least once a year, sometimes more. The ocean doesn’t bother me nearly as much as fresh water, but then I’ve never stepped on a shark. I guess it bothers me less because for the most part you can’t see what’s in there with you.

When I was in high school, instead of going to the nearest beach we’d sometimes drive the extra hour to get to San Onofre.

The nuclear power plant there cools the reactor core with circulating sea water; the ocean nearby is a good 10 degrees warmer than the whole rest of the Pacific. Surfers especially loved it ‘cause you don’t need a wetsuit and there aren’t any fish.

I stopped doing that when the tidepools at Scripps-La Jolla started to notice 6-legged starfish.
