Given how Max Cleland was treated in Georgia, John McCain was treated in the South Carolina primary in 2000, and John Kerry was disparaged by the Swift Boat liars, don’t underestimate the ability of the GOP to slime and destroy anyone’s reputation. The GOP needs to go the way of Whigs, but given their power and the money behind them, that doesn’t seem a likely prospect.
